• Visit to Rome Continued...

Thanks to all that made this journey possible! Each one of us on our pilgrimage came back changed. Going with these people sharing the experience with them, agreeing we would spoil these nine men as we believe they would never have had such attention in their lives. We all benefited from it. Blessings all the time. We were all mostly weary most of the time as finding the places each day by foot was quite difficult, but we were all full of cheer and joy. Watching these men looking after each other and us was so inspiring it truly was once in a lifetime.

  • Visit to Rome

A group of thirteen staff, volunteers and clients from Cornerstone Day Centre, part of Caritas, were among many from around the world invited to join Pope Francis to celebrate the end of the Holy Year of Mercy. Nine of the chosen who went on this amazing journey of a lifetime had experienced homelessness, some had never been on a holiday or owned a passport and with our support are now in accommodation, many of whom now volunteer at our Centre. The pope spoilt us and all that had been invited, some 4,000 present. His love and compassion for the poor shone throughout these four amazing days.

  • Computer class

For the past three months computer classes have been held twice a week in our computer suite. For many of the participants this is the first time they have used a key board and faced a computer screen. Whilst initially very nervous all our students have shown a remarkable improvement in their skills and development. They are now typing essays on Greek mythology and abstracts from Shakespeare's plays.! What a difference a few months makes with a bit of encouragement and teaching.

  • Party to say “Thank You” to our Volunteers

This year Cornerstone celebrates 25 years of helping the poor and vulnerable. During these years without the help and commitment of our Volunteers, we would have been unable to open our doors. We truly value their help very much and therefore decided to organise a party night at St. Kentigern’s Social Club so that we could express our gratitude to them.

  • Thank You for your support during the Harvest Season

The support we received from schools and colleges this Harvest has been phenomenal. Words cannot express our gratitude for their generous donations of food to the Centre. Each year we think it cannot get much better and this year was no exception! It would be impossible to list all their names, but we wish to thank all the staff, pupils, students and parents involved for their support.

  • Cornerstone's New Choir

For some time the staff at Cornerstone have been contemplating about starting up our own choir. Two weeks ago we had our first rehearsal, where we had members of staff, volunteers, and clients. Mrs Rosamund Meehan, a retired head teacher of music, took charge of the group. With weekly rehearsals and harmonies getting better, there is great excitement and anticipation for the first performance of the group on October 21st at St Kentigern's Club in Fallowfield. There we will be celebrating our 25 year anniversary, to say Thank You to all our volunteers for their commitment and service to the centre. Our gratitude to Mrs Meehan for her time, expertise and leadership. As they say " I'm sure it will be alright on the night !"

  • Trip of a Life Time to Rome

As we approach the end of the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has requested to meet with 6,000 poor, vulnerable and homeless people in Rome for 3 days of prayer and reflection. As we know Pope Francis has a great affinity for the poor and homeless. It is not unusual for him to go out at night in Rome to feed and spend time with them and had showers installed at the Vatican especially for their use.

  • Irish Association of Golfers support Cornerstone

At their annual fundraising charity day at "The Northenden Golf Club" the golfers raised a substantial amount of money, of which is to be divided amongst local charities. Once again Cornerstone were lucky enough to be one of the chosen charities. Sr. Lucy and senior support worker Angela were invited to the presentation morning at Northenden Golf Club. There the club President Larry McDonald presented them with a cheque for the fantastic amount of £5,500. We are very grateful for this generous donation, to all the golfers who took part in making the event so successful, and for their continuous support.
