It is with great sadness we announce the death yesterday of Canon O’Connor. He was in his eighties and we have many fond memories of him. He was very genuine and cared for those less fortunate.
Canon O’Connor was the priest to have the intuition to open a small cafe for the homeless, disadvantaged and rejected behind his church, St Augustine’s opposite All Saints in Manchester 27 years ago. He asked his dear friend Sr Pauline Gaughan to run it and she chose the name Cornerstone which was appropriate as ‘ The stone the builder rejected became the Cornerstone.
Sr Pauline did an amazing work with the centre and it has flourished and developed to the place it is today. Sr Lucy is now in charge and the work continues, giving hope, changing lives.
From small acorns mighty Oaks grow.
We will never forget you Canon O’Connor, you will live on in our hearts and you will be sadly missed by so many.
Canon O’Connor’s Requiem Mass will take place at St Margaret Mary’s church, New Moston at 11.00am Friday 10th November. The chief celebrant will be Bishop John.
